Halloween happens once a year, and while we may think of it as a single night to dress up in costumes, it got me wondering—how often are we in disguise, hiding behind masks, even after the trick-or-treating is over?

Could it be that, in some ways, every day is Halloween? If you’ve ever felt like you’re not fully showing up as you, you’re not alone. Society has given us many stories, rules, and expectations that shape who we think we’re supposed to be. But what if it’s time to peel back the mask and reconnect with the truth underneath?

Exploring the Masks We Wear

As we go through life, we pick up specific “masks” to protect ourselves and navigate the world. Maybe it’s the “perfect” mask we wear because we fear criticism, the “easygoing” mask because we want to please others, or even the “busy” mask to hide a sense of inadequacy. We may do it because we long to fit in, be accepted, and avoid feeling vulnerable.

This is all based on fear.

Let’s look at a few of the most common reasons people wear these metaphorical masks:

• Fear of Criticism: Have you ever held back your true thoughts because you worried about what others would think? Fear of criticism often leads us to put on a mask of approval or neutrality.
  
  
• Fear of Rejection: We sometimes adapt ourselves, shrinking or expanding, to be what we believe others want us to be, hoping it keeps us loved and accepted.
  
  
• People-Pleasing: Many of us learn to say “yes” when we mean “no,” hiding behind a mask of cheerfulness to avoid conflict or disappointment.
  
  
• The Desire to ‘Fit In’: Sometimes, we mould ourselves to the expectations around us, thinking it will lead to security or a sense of belonging.
  
  
• Intention to Control or Deceive: We may even hide aspects of ourselves to get what we think we need—validation, love, and approval.
  
  

These masks serve us in some ways but can also make us feel exhausted, unseen, and disconnected from who we truly are. The irony? They create a barrier to the authentic connection we’re actually craving.

If We Only Knew… (A Course in Miracles Reflection)

There’s a beautiful quote from A Course in Miracles that resonates deeply: “If you only knew on the path you have chosen, fear would be impossible.” Just imagine—what if the fear that holds us back from taking off our masks was, in fact, an illusion?

If we could remember our true nature, we’d realize that beneath every mask is a light that doesn’t need protection. Showing up authentically isn’t just freeing; it’s a path to genuine connection and fulfillment.

When we’re willing to take a small risk and let down the mask, we’re not left vulnerable; we’re empowered. We get to express our unique essence, reconnecting with our divine, joyful spirit.

How to Start Letting Go of the Masks:

1. Pause and Reflect: Take a few minutes in the morning or evening to consider how you showed up that day. Was there a moment you held back or put on a front? Gently reflect on why without judgment.
   
   
2. Journaling Exercise: Write down one mask you feel you wear often and ask yourself: “What am I protecting myself from?” and “What would I gain by showing my true self in this situation?”
   
   
3. Practice Vulnerability: Start small, perhaps with a trusted friend. Express an opinion or share something genuine and notice how it feels to show a little more of the real you.
   
   
4. Affirmation: Use a gentle affirmation to remind yourself of your worth beyond any role or mask: “I am safe to be my true self.”

A Gentle Challenge to Embrace Your Light:
